Internship Opportunities at MUCCRI

Makerere University Centre for Climate Change Research and Innovations (MUCCRI) was established in 2013 to raise climate change awareness, build a climate change knowledge base and innovations, and inform policy by engaging in research, training and outreach activities.

In addition, MUCCRI also engages in packaging, communicating, and disseminating climate change information, knowledge and innovations to the wider public.

The USAID/Uganda Education and Research to Improve Climate Change Adaptation (ERICCA) Activity supports MUCCRI to build its capacity to become a national and regional centre of excellence in climate change. To this end, ERICCA strategically deploys human, financial and technology resources to address climate adaptation and related issues in Uganda. The Activity mobilizes students, academics, scientists, and researchers to work side-by-side and in partnerships to build upon the foundational efforts made by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) to realise the mission of MUCCRI through climate change research, training and knowledge management actions.

Past Internship Opportunities in 2017

#1. Internship Opportunity: Unpaid Internship Opportunity for New Graduates

FHI 360-Uganda is seeking for three (3) unpaid interns for the USAID/Uganda Education and Research to Improve Climate Change Adaptation (ERICCA) Activity, a USAID-funded project. The overall goal of the USAID/Uganda Education and Research to Improve Climate Change Adaptation (ERICCA) Activity, is to help establish the Makerere University Centre for Climate Change Research and Innovations (MUCCRI) as a recognized national and regional hub of academic, professional development and research excellence in climate science, climate adaptation, and related disciplines.

To support this goal, ERICCA strategically deploys human, financial and technology resources with the target continually focused on building Ugandan capacity and proficiency to address climate adaptation and related issues. More specifically, the Activity mobilizes students, academics, scientists, and researchers to work side-by-side and in partnership with Ugandan colleagues to build upon the foundational efforts made by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and others in developing and establishing MUCCRI through research and education actions.

#2. Internship Opportunity: Climate Change Knowledge Management for Graduate Students

MUCCRI has over the last three years been supported by ERICCA to engage in climate change adaptation training, research and outreach activities that have generated various outputs. These outputs need to be packaged into knowledge products that can be disseminated to various users and the wider public through the MUCCRI website and other avenues. To facilitate this process, ERICCA is supporting MUCCRI with two internship opportunities for graduate students who are in the final stages of their Masters programmes and have background knowledge on climate change and knowledge management. The internship opportunity will involve working with MUCCRI staff and other faculty in CAES to package and communicate climate change knowledge. The selected candidates will first be trained on climate change knowledge management before they embark on the internship. The internship programme may also involve research and other field based activities with CAES/ MUCCRI/ ERICCA staff and partners.

The aim of this internship programme is two-fold. Firstly, is to equip the students, especially those in the final stages of their graduate programmes with skills and knowledge around climate change knowledge management. Secondly, the internship is intended to provide an opportunity to University faculty to link teaching, research and dissemination to needs of users of climate change information and knowledge products.

#3. Internship Opportunity: Internship Programme On Community Based Adaptation to Climate Change For University Undergraduate Students

The 2017 internship programme will focus on smallholder farming communities susceptible to drought mainly in the following districts of Uganda; Mubende, Kiboga, Luweero, Nakasongola, Nakaseke, Sembabule, Kasese, Isingiro, Bushenyi, Mbale, Iganga, Hoima, Gulu and Lira.

The programme will be implemented through three stages

  1. Training; students will undergo a three-days face-to-face training in climate change and community based adaptation with focus on responses to drought.
  2. Field-based Practicum; Students will be prepared and supported to gain practical understanding and experience with smallholder farmer communities particularly those involved in soil and water conservation.
  3. Research; Faculty mentoring participating students will design research questions to guide the research focus of the research piece of the internship.

The aim of this internship programme is two-fold. Firstly, to equip students, especially those in the final stages of their undergraduate programmes with skills and knowledge around community-based adaptation to climate change. Secondly, the internship is intended to provide an opportunity to University faculty to link teaching and research to information needs of communities involved in various climate change adaptation efforts in Uganda.
