Climate Change  Change Short Courses at Makerere University

     

Makerere University Center for Climate Change Research and Innovation (MUCCRI) short courses on climate change are organised for technical staff from central and local governments, as well as policy and decision makers and practitioners in climate change related organisations, programmes and projects. The courses are meant to increase their climate change awareness, and knowledge and skills to address climate change in their work. MUCCRI also designs and delivers short courses tailored to organisational and programme needs.

Past short courses
Short courses offered in 2016
In 2016, MUCCRI financially supported by the USAID funded Uganda Education and Research to Improve Climate Change Adaptation Activity (ERICCA) organized two short courses (i) Climate change and sustainable development, and (ii) Addressing climate change in agricultural development. Over 90 participants from central and local governments, academic and research institutions, civil society and private sector attended the two courses and were awarded certificates of attendance.

1.  Climate change and sustainable development:
The six-day short course was conducted from 20 – 25th June 2016 at Makerere University and was attended by 41 participants. The overall objective of the course was that climate considerations are effectively integrated into national and local level development strategies, programmes and projects. The immediate objective of the course was that all course participants are equipped to effectively address climate change in the framework of sustainable development through their jobs. The main topics covered included: (i) an introduction to climate change; (ii) linkages between development and climate change; (iii) sustainable development in view of a changing climate; (iv) climate change adaptation; (v) climate change mitigation; and, (vi) climate change and green growth (green development).

2.  Climate change and sustainable development:
The six-day short course was conducted from 25 – 30th July 2015 at Makerere University and was attended by 50 participants. The overall objective of the course was that climate smart considerations are effectively integrated into agricultural development policy, programmes, projects and other farmer focused climate change response actions. The immediate objective is that all course participants are equipped to effectively address climate change in the framework of agricultural development through their jobs. The main topics covered included: (i) introduction to climate change globally and locally; (ii) vulnerability of agriculture to a changing climate; (iii) agriculture focused climate change mitigation and adaptation as a sustainable development process; (iv) Climate Smart Agriculture – concepts and practices; (v) building climate resilience among smallholder farmers; (vi) integrating climate change in food and nutritional security programmes and projects; and, (vii) towards low carbon agricultural development

Upcoming short courses – 2017
In 2017, MUCCRI financially supported by the USAID funded Uganda Education and Research to Improve Climate Change Adaptation Activity (ERICCA) has organized two short course
1.  Climate change and natural resource management: 10-15th April 2017
2.  Climate resilient urban development and green cities: 2nd – 6th May 2017
The courses are targeting participants from central and local governments, academic and research institutions, civil society and private sector. Participants in the two courses and will be awarded certificates of attendance.

The deadline for completing online registration/applications is Friday 17th March 2017; but it is better to register/apply early.
The cost of the course is covered under a scholarship fund offered by a USAID supported project entitled the ‘USAID/Uganda Education and Research to Improve Climate Change Adaptation (ERICCA) Activity’. ERICCA is supporting (MUCCRI) to become a centre of excellence in climate change training, research and outreach. The scholarship covers teaching, reading materials, stationery, meals, and field excursions. The participants will be responsible for meeting the cost of transport to and from Makerere University during the course.
