MUCCRI Public Lectures

The MUCCRI Seminar series program is an important channel for awareness raising on the Climate Change topic. It serves as an avenue for MUCCRI to present itself to stakeholders and the Public as an important Centre for research and Climate Change capacity building. The Climate Change Seminar Series serves to increase the ability of staff, students at Makerere University and the Public to work closely with a wide range of practitioners to address an array of Climate related topics.

MUCCRI Seminar series are also potential channels for students and organizations to network for internships and future collaboration. Further, they present an opportunity for MUCCRI/Activity to identify new research findings and climate information to disseminate to all MUCCRI stakeholders and raise awareness of the work the Centre is undertaking.

Background

During the years 2015, 2016 and 2017, the world including Africa connected the dots in engendering a development pathway with climate resilience at the center stage. The year 2018 represents an opportune year for Africa to solidify its quest for sustainable inclusive growth by leveraging on climate actions. What is even more pressing is that 2018 marks the 3rd Year in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Change Agreement. But one question remains: Is Africa making progress, and if not how will Africa achieve all these rosy grandeur agendas?

Africa does not lack ideas or innovations, rather how to convert the known ideas and innovations into full-scale solutions. But there is a winning formula, which is as clear as day. Pockets of success stories across all the sub-regions in Africa demonstrate the potential of this winning formula to simultaneously achieve socio-economic development imperatives alongside climate objectives. But these pockets of success by themselves are a drop in the ocean.

Discussing how this could be utilized to engender an inclusive and sustainable socio-economic growth to achieve multiple SDGs for Africa’s masses under the changing climate is an urgent needed imperative. The Public lecture is premised on how we can Make Africa Work through the Power of Innovative Volunteerism
