The CBA11 Youth Conference – 28-29th June 2017

The 11th International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation to Climate Change (CBA11) will take place in Kampala Uganda 22-29th June 2017. A CBA11 Youth Conference is being organized and will run parallel to the main CBA11 Conference on 28—29th June 2017.

The CBA11 Youth Conference whose focus will be on “Enhancing the ability of youth to build ecosystem resilience” is being organized by Makerere University Centre for Climate Change Research and Innovations (MUCCRI) with support by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE), and the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD).

The Conference targets to incorporate the ideas and innovations of youth in the policy recommendation on community based adaptation to climate change. It will be multi-dimensional involving discussions on how the youth can engage in climate change adaptation, but importantly looking at ways of building long lasting, beneficial, and sustainable systems that can benefit young people while enhancing their ability to participate in climate change response actions and enhancing ecosystem resilience. The conference is expected to play vital role in building a stronger network among youth participants and sharing their knowledge and ideas.

Aims of the CBA11 Youth Conference
→ To provide a platform to stimulate, develop, and share information on how the youth can be encouraged to address climate change in their own communities
→ To encourage the youth to become agents of change in addressing climate change in their own communities and to promote ecosystem resilience.
→ To provide a space for networking and exchange of ideas, strategies, success stories and lessons in youth work on climate change.
→ To enable youth learning from experts and from field experience in the fight against climate change

→ To provide an opportunity to the CBA11 participants to learn from youth perceptivities to climate change.

The Past CBA Youth Conferences

During the CBA10 held in Dhaka - Bangladesh in April 2016, a parallel multi-dimensional youth conference, the CBA10 Youth Conference, was organized under the theme “Youth mobilization to enhance urban community resilience”. The CBA 10 Youth Conference which was organized by ICCCAD and was supported and publicized by IIED, Plan International, WaterAid, ActionAid Bangladesh and Save the Children and was aimed at encouraging the youth to be agents of change, particularly in addressing climate change issues in their own communities was held.

Building on lessons and experiences from the CBA10 and the growing interest in the youth, the organizers of CBA11 will organize a parallel CBA11 Youth Conference during which there will be more interlinkages with the main CBA conference with more opportunities for the youth to learn from experts and from field experience. The plan is that the other CBA participants should also be given more opportunities to learn from the youth who will be participating. The Conferences focus is on increasing climate change awareness among the young people, increasing their confidence, and support them to ready to take on the challenges brought about by climate change, while taking advantage of new environment oriented opportunities that may arise.

The CBA11 Youth Conference is an event targeted to incorporate the ideas and innovations of youth in the policy recommendation on Community Based Adaptation to Climate Change that will run parallel to the CBA11, an international conference on community based adaptation organized by International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Uganda Government’s Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE), Makerere University (MAK) through the Makerere University Centre for Climate Change Research and Innovations (MUCCRI), and the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD).
The Youth Conference is a collaborated effort of MUCCRI, IIED, MWE and ICCAD and other partners and sponsors.
With the theme “Enhancing the ability of youth to build ecosystem resilience”, will take place on 28-29th June 2017 at Hotel Africa, Kampala. Through a rigorous selection process 150 ideal candidates will be selected to attend the conference.

Conference structure and programme

The CBA11 Youth Conference will be held at Hotel Africana in Kampala, Uganda. The venue is near the venue for the main CBA11 Conference (Royal Suites Hotel, Bugolobi) to enable speakers and youth shuttle to and back from the two venues). The Youth Conference will consist of two days of interactive conference discussions utilizing a variety of different session formats. These will include formal plenary and parallel sessions. Interactive ‘out of the box sessions’ will be held to enable a more hands-on approach to learning. There will be a Youth Competition session to encourage youth to disseminate their ideas through essay, art, poster and documentaries competition for the delta plan.
